Kel-Berg Concrete Mixers

Out mixers aim to outlast the concrete they pour.

We've still got quite a long way to reach that aim, but the latest version of Kel-Berg mixers are the strongest and most durable they've ever been. Better materials, better rust protection, safer access. All reasons to consider having one on your fleet.

The Kel-Berg Mixer

Better steels.
Better rust protection.
Lower operating costs.

Concrete mixers are constantly being worn down. The drum, mixing spirals, capping, and chutes are forever being ground away, and the paint work is soaked in litres of acidic cleaning chemicals over its life.

Without proper protection, you’ll end up with a worn out, rusty install that costs you more to operate and is worth less on the used market.

Kel-Berg mixers now use a higher grade of steel and more advanced rust protections to reduce those costs, keeping more of the money you earn in your pocket.

Why it lasts

Improvements that protect the highest wearing areas. Cycle after cycle.

  1. 1 Wear

The whole drum in Hardox® 500 Tuf

HARDOX® 500 Tuf combines HARDOX® 450 and HARDOX® 500, giving you the respective hardness and wear resistance of both, whilst remaining light enough to maximise your payload.

    How the drum lasts
  2. 2 Corrosion

    A durable metallised finish

By shot blasting, metallising, and then painting, the finish on your Kel-Berg mixer will last even longer. That's the chutes, pedestals, subframe, ladder, almost everything that's not the drum.

    How the steel stays protected
  3. 3 Cracking

    Bolt-together assembly

By bolting the assembly instead of welding, vibration is better absorbed and the risk of cracks is almost removed. It also means swapping damaged components is a far quicker job.

    How the structure holds

1 Wear · Drum shell

The entire drum.
Hardox® 500 Tuf.

The whole drum shell is fabricated from SSAB's Hardox® 500 Tuf. It has the hardness of Hardox® 500 to resist abrasion from aggregate, and the guaranteed toughness of Hardox® 450 to resist cracking. This means a longer lasting drum whilst still only weighing 1,550 kg.

Up to

50%

longer service life than a 450 HBW steel of the same thickness.

  • Longer life, no extra weight

Up to 50% longer service life than a 450 HBW drum of the same thickness. You get the extra years without giving up any payload.

  • Fewer repair bills

Guaranteed toughness means the drum resists cracking as well as wear, so less money goes on welding repairs and more stays in your margin.

  • More time on the road

With no softer zones wearing through first, there are no patch repairs to schedule. Fewer workshop days means more loads delivered.

  • Holds its value

A drum with years of life left is worth more when it's time to sell or trade in. Buyers can see the difference.

What it means

Up to 50% longer service life compared to your old 450 HBW mixer drum.

2 Corrosion

Metallised, not just painted.

Mixers are usually shot blasted painted. We've added metallisation in between: the whole superstructure is arc sprayed with molten a zinc-alumimnium alloy prior to painting, creating a finish built for the highly corrosive world of concrete haulage.

Pedestals, subframe, charge and discharge chutes, flitch plates, and crow's nest.

Step 1 · Shot-blast

Blasted back to bare steel.

Shot-blasting cleans the steel and leaves a rough surface for the coating to key into.

Step 2 · Metallise

Sprayed with molten zinc-aluminium.

The alloy goes onto the freshly blasted steel and bonds mechanically to its surface, forming a tough sacrificial layer.

Step 3 · Paint

Painted straight over the coating.

Two layers of defence. If the paint ever chipped, the metallisation corrodes first, stopping rust spreading under the paintwork.

  • Paint finish
  • Zinc-aluminium layer
  • Steel
What it means

Two layers of protection, bonded tighter, so the finish lasts years longer.

Why zinc-aluminium Metallisation

A mixer’s superstructure is attacked from both ends of the pH scale: highly alkaline concrete on one side, acidic cleaning chemicals on the other. Standard galvanising is pure zinc, and in these conditions it corrodes quickly.

Metallising is different in two ways. First, the alloy contains aluminium, which forms a stable oxide layer that resists these conditions far better than zinc alone. Second, it’s sprayed on as molten droplets, leaving a rough surface that the paint bonds to strongly, keeping moisture out.

The result is a chemically resistant sacrificial layer with a tightly bonded paint finish on top. Few manufacturers metallise at all. We do it across the whole superstructure, as standard, not as an add-on.

3 Cracking · Bolt-together assembly

Bolted together, so there are no welds to crack.

By bolting the assembly instead of welding, vibration is better absorbed and the risk of cracks is almost removed. It also means swapping damaged components is a far quicker job.

Under constant vibration Can crack overtime Absorbs it
When it needs attention A costly weld repair A quick bolt retorque
What it means

Routine maintenance is a spanner job, not a welding job, so your mixer stays on the road and out of the workshop.

The drum, the finish and the structure, all built to last.

Operating it

Easier to own, day after day.

Lasting longer is only half of it. The everyday jobs, and the parts you'll eventually need, are made simpler too.

Aluminium slide-down ladder

Safer access to the crow's nest.

The ladder is aluminium, so it won't rust and it's significantly lighter than steel. It's easier to lift out and stow, with less strain on the driver and less risk of it being dropped.

PMP gearbox and water pump

Drive parts you can get anywhere.

PMP is one of the most popular and established makers of mixer drive components. Spares are widely available, so replacement parts are easy to source.

Backed for it

Built to last, and backed by our warranty.

Each warranty covers a part of the build you've just read about: the drum, the metallised superstructure and the bolted structure.

Questions

Ask us a question →

We build our mixers onto DAF XDC 8×4 chassis. An 8×4 gives you 32 tonnes gross weight with the manoeuvrability you need on site. If you run another make, tell us and we'll check whether it can be built.

If a truck is in stock, it can be with you soon after the paperwork is done. A truck built to order takes longer, depending on chassis availability. Ask us and we'll give you a date for the exact spec you want.

On an 8×4 chassis we fit 9 m³ drums. Most operators now choose 9 m³. Mixes have become runnier in recent years, and the extra cubic metre lets you carry a full payload of those lighter loads.

No. The Hardox® 500 Tuf drum weighs the same as our previous Hardox® 450 drum, so you carry exactly the same payload. What changes is how long it lasts: up to 50% longer service life from the same weight of steel.
