HOW TO CHOOSE a Concrete MIXER Truck
Choosing your Chassis for Concrete Haulage
For hauling concrete, chassis brand matters less than chassis specification. Brand choice mainly affects driver familiarity, service network proximity, capital-vs-residual price sensitivity, and cab preference, which is why Kel-Berg supplies new mixer chassis from three manufacturers (Scania, DAF, and Renault), giving operators options that match their existing fleet preferences.
What actually matters for the work is how the chassis is specified. Three things are critical:
- Driveline. Mixers run off-road on poor ground, often loaded close to 32,000kg GVW, and arrive on site early in the construction process. The chassis needs high max power for pulling and high torque at low rev range, the latter saves fuel and reduces driveline wear by keeping the engine off high revs.
- Axle configuration. 8×4 (twin steer + twin drive) gives 32t GVW with site-access manoeuvrability and 8m³ – 9m³ drum capacity. 6-wheelers turn tighter but cap at 6–7m³. Cross and inter-axle differential locks are essential are also valuable, without them, one slipping tyre on loose ground costs you the torque you’ve paid for.
- Engine-mounted PTO. Standard gearbox PTOs only engage when stationary, which is useless for mixers. The drum needs to turn continuously between batching plant and site. Engine-mounted PTOs run whenever the engine is on.
All Kel-Berg mixer chassis are specified to these standards by default, with extras added for driver comfort. Click on the products above to explore their specifications in more detail.
Kel-Berg’s Curated Body Partnerships
Kel-Berg supplies concrete mixer bodies from three manufacturers, Kel-Berg, McPhee, and Schwing-Stetter. We stand behind all the equipment we have available, believing it to be some of the best and most popular on the market. In doing so, operators have the choice of a broad of chassis and mixer brands from one place.
Kel-Berg Mixers are designed and built by our group using the same principles that make our grab loaders and tipping trailers popular: modular assembly for quick parts replacement, exceptional anti-corrosion protection, and high-grade abrasion-resistant materials throughout. We’re naturally biased toward our own installation, but this isn’t without justification.
McPhee Mixers have long been the leading volume supplier for concrete mixers in the UK, long-established, with strong aftersales support and parts availability. The installation Kel-Berg stocks is a straightforward, cost-effective solution for concrete haulage.
Schwing-Stetter Mixers come from one of the global specialists in concrete equipment, with a long pedigree across truck mixers, concrete pumps, batching plants, and combined pump-mixers. Schwing drums are built in 500-grade steel with specific attention to safety and maintenance – well-suited to operators looking for premium build quality and and experienced engineering.
Whichever you choose, every body installation is supported by OEM aftersales and warranty designed to keep the vehicle earning. Talk to our team about which suits your operation.
Mixer Drum capacity
On an 8×4 chassis, drum capacities run at either 8m³ or 9m³. We’ve seen more operators specifying 9m³ in recent years, partly because the consistency of concrete being hauled has shifted toward runnier mixes (slurries with lower aggregate content, driven by the boom in underfloor heating installations). The extra 1m³ gives the flexibility to maximise payload on these less-dense mixes without over-filling.
That extra capacity comes with a critical caveat: drum space is not the same as room for more concrete. Dry, aggregate-heavy mixes weigh more per cubic metre, so a 9m³ drum filled to the brim with a dry mix will overload the vehicle. Always plan capacity against the actual mix density you’re hauling, not the drum volume.
For operations consistently hauling drier mixes or carrying smaller loads, 8m³ remains a sensible choice with marginally better unit economics. For operations exposed to varied mix consistencies, 9m³ gives more flexibility.
CONCRETE TRUCK FAQ
Typical pricing for a new 8×4 concrete mixer truck ranges from £150,000 to £180,000 depending on chassis and bodywork chosen, and additional features like ancillary equipment, livery, and finance arrangements. Get a tailored quote for your specific requirements.
New build orders typically take 4–8 weeks from order to delivery (depending on stock availability). In-stock vehicles can be delivered in a few weeks.
All three are quality manufacturers and fundamentally do the same job. The difference is in the details; component placement, quality of materials used, anti-corrosion processes, assembly methods and availability. Once these factors are taken into account does it become clear why each sits at a different price point.
Yes. Kel-Berg has its own in-house brokerage, meaning finance can be arranged through a range of funders to cover a broad choice of finance products including hire purchase, finance lease, and contract hire options. This means operators can acquire their equipment in a manner that best matches their own businesses and circumstances. Learn more about Kel-Berg Finance.
Provided drums are well maintained, the entire installation is regularly greased, oils are changed, and maintenance is carried out in accordance with the manufacturers requirements, a mixer drum can last between 5 to 6 years before they require any serious refurbishment.
Standard concrete mixer trucks transport pre-mixed concrete from a depot. For on-site mixing, volumetric concrete trucks are a different vehicle category – Kel-Berg can advise if your operation would benefit from volumetric over standard mixer.
