Choosing a Concrete Mixer
Specifying the chassis
For hauling concrete, how the chassis is specified matters more than the badge on the grille. Three things are critical:
- Driveline. Mixers run off-road on poor ground, often loaded close to 32 t GVW. The chassis needs strong peak power for pulling and high torque low in the rev range — the latter saves fuel and reduces driveline wear by keeping the engine off high revs.
- Axle configuration. 8×4 (twin steer, twin drive) gives 32 t GVW with site manoeuvrability and 8–9 m³ drum capacity. Cross- and inter-axle differential locks are essential — without them, one slipping tyre on loose ground costs you the torque you’ve paid for.
- Engine-mounted PTO. Standard gearbox PTOs only engage when stationary, which is useless for a mixer — the drum needs to turn continuously between batching plant and site. An engine-mounted PTO runs whenever the engine does.
All Kel-Berg mixer chassis are specified to these standards by default, with extras added for driver comfort.
Curate body partnerships
We supply mixer bodies from three manufacturers, so operators can match chassis and body brand from one place. We stand behind all of them — some of the best and most popular installations on the market.
Kel-Berg mixers are designed and built by our own group on the same principles as our grab loaders and tipping trailers: modular assembly for fast parts replacement, exceptional anti-corrosion protection, and high-grade abrasion-resistant materials throughout.
McPhee has long been the leading volume supplier of concrete mixers in the UK — well-established, with strong aftersales support and parts availability. A straightforward, cost-effective installation for concrete haulage.
Schwing-Stetter comes from a global specialist in concrete equipment, with a long pedigree across truck mixers, pumps and batching plants. Drums are built in 500-grade steel with particular attention to safety and maintenance.
Whichever you choose, every body installation is backed by OEM aftersales and warranty. Talk to our team about which suits your operation.
Choosing drum capacity
On an 8×4 chassis, drum capacities run at 8 m³ or 9 m³. More operators have moved to 9 m³ in recent years, partly because mixes have trended runnier — lower-aggregate slurries driven by the boom in underfloor heating. The extra cubic metre gives flexibility to maximise payload on those less-dense mixes.
That comes with a critical caveat: drum space is not the same as room for more concrete. Dry, aggregate-heavy mixes weigh more per cubic metre, so a 9 m³ drum filled to the brim with a dry mix will overload the vehicle. Always plan capacity against the mix density you’re hauling, not the drum volume. For consistently drier mixes or smaller loads, 8 m³ remains a sensible choice with marginally better unit economics.

Common Questions
Typically £150,000–£180,000 depending on the chassis and bodywork chosen, plus options such as ancillary equipment, livery and finance arrangements. We'll prepare a tailored quote for your specific requirements.
New-build orders typically take 4–8 weeks from order to delivery, depending on stock availability. In-stock vehicles can be delivered within a few weeks.
All three are quality manufacturers doing fundamentally the same job. The difference is in the details — component placement, materials, anti-corrosion process, assembly methods and availability — which is what puts each at a different price point.
Yes. Kel-Berg has its own in-house brokerage, so finance can be arranged across a range of funders and products — hire purchase, finance lease and contract hire — to match your business and circumstances.
Provided the drum is well maintained — regular greasing, oil changes and servicing to the manufacturer's schedule — a mixer drum can run 5–6 years before any serious refurbishment.
Standard mixer trucks transport pre-mixed concrete from a depot. On-site mixing uses volumetric trucks, which are a different vehicle category — talk to us and we'll advise whether volumetric would suit your operation.
