Technical Detail

Chassis

The DAF XDC sleeper cab is finished in Luxury interior trim with the Vision dashboard, which descends towards the windscreen for a direct view of the road. The driver’s seat is air suspended (Comfort Air, high backed) with armrest, alongside a foldable cinema seat for the co-driver, and the steering wheel is leather finished. A lower kerb-view window in the co-driver’s door, a driver’s side roller blind and electric window openers complete the driving position.

The driving area is well specced. A 5-inch colour display sits in the instrument panel with Driver Performance Assistant fuel coaching, and the DAF Luxury Plus infotainment system adds a 10.1-inch touch display, providing DAF Truck Navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, FM/DAB radio and five speakers. Automatic climate control with an activated-carbon pollen filter keeps the cab comfortable, and LED interior lighting dims to a red night-driving mode.

Externally, the XDC carries a three-piece steel protruding bumper with integrated fog lights, a radiator protection plate and steel front underrun protection. Entry is via three steps with an anti-slip rigid first step, and central locking comes with two remote units.

The lower bunk carries a 150 mm ‘Xtra Comfort’ pocket sprung mattress with a protection net, and curtains run along the windscreen and the side windows to close the cab off for the night. A storage drawer sits underneath the bunk, with additional storage space at its left and right, accessible with the bunk tilted.

Extra insulation on the cab back, side walls and roof, together with a 6 kW water-to-air auxiliary cab and engine heater with residual heat pump and timer, keeps the cab comfortable overnight in any season.

The XDC 450 carries DAF’s MX-11, a 10.8-litre, six-cylinder Euro 6 multi-torque engine producing 449 hp at 1,600 rpm, and 2,350 Nm of torque from just 900 rpm. The low-rev torque means power is effectively delivered when pulling a full load from standing start, without revving the engine hard, then settling into efficient cruising on the road run.

Drive is delivered through ZF’s TraXon 12-speed automated overdrive gearbox with a manoeuvring mode that engages the driveline in proportion to the accelerator pedal, and off-road software with a Rock-free function, selected from dashboard switches.

An Eco performance shift strategy balances fuel efficiency with driveability, with an Eco off button for full performance. The SR1132T single-reduction tandem runs a 3.73 rear axle ratio with cross-axle and inter-axle differential locks for traction on poor ground.

The 8×4 layout runs twin 7,100 kg front axles on parabolic leaf suspension with shock absorbers and a stabiliser, configured for extra-high driving conditions, and a rear tandem rated to 19,000 kg group load on trapezium leaf suspension, at 32,000 kg GVM.

Braking is ventilated discs all round on a dual-circuit air system with electronic brake control and anti-slip regulation. The electro-pneumatic park brake has Auto Apply, it engages when the driver’s door opens or at ignition off, so the vehicle can’t be left unparked. The MX Engine Brake works with the exhaust brake, giving high braking power at low engine rpm on laden descents.

Wheels are Alcoa Brushed aluminium discs with silver-grey protection rings, on Goodyear on/off-road steer and traction tyres, 295/80R22.5.

A 330-litre aluminium fuel tank is mounted on the right-hand side, fed through an on-engine heated fuel pre-filter with water separator, with the 45-litre AdBlue tank alongside it.

Emission control is DAF’s Euro 6 DPF/SCR system, with a vertical tail pipe and diffuser behind the cab discharging upward, clear of the crew working around the drum. The air intake sits at the front below the cab, with shields beneath the radiator to prevent dust disturbance from the cooling fan.

The chassis is fitted with a rear engine power take-off, permanently engaged without a clutch, on a 100 mm flange. Because the PTO is driven from the engine rather than the gearbox, the mixer hydraulics have live drive whether the truck is moving or parked, keeping the drum turning.

Lighting is LED throughout: headlights with impact-resistant Lexan lenses and levelling, integrated daytime running lights, bumper-mounted fog lights, LED rear light units and LED side marker lights.

Electrical power comes from twin 175 Ah batteries and a 110 A alternator on a 24 V supply. Two 12 V accessory outlets and three USB-A connections sit on the dashboard, with an extractable dashboard table at the top of the centre console for paperwork, and an open storage compartment in the centre console.

A VDO DTCO smart digital tachograph is fitted, with a GNSS receiver and DSRC unit, compliant with EU Mobility Package 1 as set out in the EU tachograph regulations.

PACCAR Connect online fleet management is built in, giving insight into truck, driver and location information, with a GNSS antenna in the standard antenna set for positioning. Wiring and connectors are also in place for a universal FMS fleet management system, reading vehicle information to the truck manufacturers’ FMS standard.

Vehicle Stability Control improves directional stability and roll-over safety, intervening against understeer, oversteer and jack-knifing. A rear-view camera shows the area behind the vehicle on the infotainment display, with an acoustic reverse warning protecting those around the truck when reversing.

Security is covered by an engine immobiliser, and a standardised connector is fitted ready to accept an alcohol interlock breathalyser.

The chassis cab is supplied with DAF’s Warranty Plus package: 2 years vehicle and 3 years driveline, with associated breakdown cover. Additional service packages are available at additional cost.

Bodywork

The 9 m³ drum comes from Schwing-Stetter’s Light Line platform, designed to keep drum weight down. Geometric volume is 15,000 litres with a 12.45° drum inclination.

The mixing spiral’s main wear zones are 500 HB steel, with 550 HB steel on the blade sides where aggregate contact is most aggressive. A roller greasing point on the rear pedestal makes daily greasing a ground-level job, and a front-mounted drum lock secures the drum when needed.

Drum drive is a PMB planetary mixer gearbox powered by a Bosch Rexroth A4VTG90 axial piston pump, a closed-circuit hydrostatic drive purpose-built for truck mixers. A complete oil cooling system with thermostat and fan controls hydraulic temperatures.

Drum speed is set by a fixed four-position electronic control (EDC), holding the selected drum speed independent of road speed.

A 500-litre pressurised water tank supplies the wash-down and slump-adjustment water, driven by compressed air from the chassis braking system (Schwing-Stetter’s AIRSYSTEM). A 500 L flow meter with valves meters water into the drum, with the inlet duct integrated into the feed hopper.

Fill connections are fitted both sides of the truck, and two wash-down hoses (3 m at the top of the ladder, 10 m at the bottom) cover drum, chutes and truck at the end of the run. An external level indicator shows tank contents at a glance.

Discharge is via a swivel chute with a 4 mm wear liner and manual telescopic adjustment, plus two plastic extension chutes stowed on the mudwings with a locking stowage point. A rear-facing slump-meter pressure gauge gives indication of the mix without climbing the ladder.

Cable drum controls are fitted both in the cab and at the rear control station. Access to the feed hopper is by sliding ladder onto a full platform with a fall-protection gate.
