Choosing a Grab Loader
Grab loaders are built to work without support equipment. The crane loads and offloads on its own, so there’s no need for a separate excavator, loading shovel or extra labour on site. That makes them the practical choice for collecting rubble and debris from small house-building projects, roadside and utilities work, and delivering materials, aggregates, conduit, pipework, into tight suburban sites where a rigid tipper alone can’t do the job.
How spec impacts full life cost
A cheaply specified grab truck looks like a saving on day one, then takes it back through downtime, hire cover while it’s off the road, and a weak trade-in price when you come to change it. The specification decides which of those costs you’re carrying.
Corrosion protection, panel repairability and steel grade up are all key aspects of the spec to consider, not just payload and price.
Our solution: every Kel-Berg grab loader is designed around its whole working life, corrosion protection, bolt-together repairs, and body materials rated for grab loading, all spec’ed as standard.
Rust’s impact on resale
A rusty truck doesn’t just look tired, it tells a story about the business running it. It undermines confidence with customers who see it turn up on their site, looks out of place next to a smart fleet when you’re pitching for new work, and puts buyers off when you come to sell, even if the truck still runs fine underneath.
Look for galvanised subframes and brackets, not just a painted finish, plus a shotblasting before painting so the coating actually bonds instead of sealing over dirt and flaking early.
We galvanise the subframe, headboard, valances, mud wings, light brackets, body handles, ladders and side guard arms, and shotblast every body before it’s painted, so it stays looking the part for as long as you own it.
Component damage shouldn’t mean a workshop visit
Grab work knocks side guards, rear underruns and headboards regularly. If those panels are welded on, a knock means cutting, grinding and re-welding, a job for a proper workshop and a skilled welder, not a roadside fix.
Look for bolt-on construction for the panels most likely to get hit.
Our solution: side guards, rear underruns, headboards and sheet arms bolt on with standard tools, so a damaged panel comes off and goes back on at your own yard, a local garage, or roadside, no welding required.
Lower grade steel wears through earlier
The floor, sidewalls and top rails take the direct impact from loading, excavator buckets and loose aggregate. Standard mild steel thins and deforms under that punishment faster than you’d expect.
Look for: a named wear-resistant steel grade in the body spec, not just “heavy-duty steel.”
Our solution: flooring, sidewalls, top rails and headboards are built in HARDOX 450, so the body stays straight and presentable for longer. And that’s the full body, not just the floor.

Common Questions
A grab loader has its own crane and grab attachment, so it can load and unload materials itself without needing an excavator or loading shovel on site.
DAF, Scania, Volvo and Mercedes chassis cabs.
Yes. Self-loading means no extra plant needs access to the site, which is often the deciding factor on small or restricted-access jobs.
Key components are galvanised and the bodywork is shotblasted before painting, rather than painted straight over.
