Technical Detail
Chassis
The Scania CP17N day cab, with XT package, is trimmed in vinyl wall upholstery and headliner, with rubber floor mats throughout. Driver and passenger seats are heated, with adjustable shock absorbers and armrests in XT woven upholstery, and the steering wheel is exclusive leather, adjustable for tilt and slide.
The driving area is well specced. A 12.9-inch full-HD touchscreen provides Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and DAB radio, with a separate driver display for tachograph and tyre-pressure readouts. Automatic climate control keeps the cab comfortable year round, and ambient interior lighting sets the mood after dark.
Externally, the XT package adds a 150 mm protruding bumper with headlamp protection, an external sun visor and ribbed mirror casings. Wide, practical boarding steps ease entry and exit, with an XT logo light projection onto the ground, and remote central locking comes with two keys.
The P420 XT carries Scania’s DC13 176, a 13-litre, six-cylinder Euro 6 engine producing 420 hp at 1,800 rpm, and 2,300 Nm of torque from just 900 rpm. The low-rev torque means power is effectively delivered when pulling a full load from standing start, without revving the engine hard, then settling into efficient cruising on the road run.
Drive is delivered through Scania’s G25CM1 14-speed Opticruise gearbox with a crawler gear for controlled low-speed manoeuvring on site, and an overdrive for motorway travelling.
Fully automated two-pedal operation gives economy, standard and off-road performance modes, so fuel-efficient driving and extra power are both available when needed. The RB662 + R660 axle set runs a 2.92 diff ratio with a diff lock for traction on poor ground.
The 8×4 layout runs twin 7,500 kg front axles on parabolic leaf suspension with a front anti-roll bar. The rear bogie is rated to 21,000 kg technical capacity on parabolic leaf springs, registered for road use at 19,000 kg.
Braking is discs all round with electronic brake control, ABS, traction control and hill hold. The manual and automatic exhaust brake delivers 200 kW of retardation at 2,400 rpm, controlled from a lever beside the steering wheel or automatically via the brake pedal, for extra stopping power on laden descents.
Wheels are 22.5 × 8.25 steel rims on all axles, running Goodyear regional-pattern steer tyres and construction-pattern drive tyres for grip on site. Tyre pressure monitoring covers all twelve wheel positions, shown in the instrument cluster.
A 325-litre aluminium fuel tank is mounted on the left-hand side, fitted with a fuel heater, a lockable filler cap and an anti-siphon device for theft protection. The 47-litre AdBlue tank sits on the right-hand side.
Emission control is Scania’s Twin-SCR system, with the exhaust discharging vertically.
The chassis is fitted with Scania’s EG10R DCP1B power take-off, taken from the rear of the gearbox with a choice of two ratios, 1:1.19 low, 1:1.53 high, and rated to 1,000 Nm, giving the crane and tipping gear a strong, direct hydraulic drive on site.
Lighting is LED throughout: main and dipped beam headlamps with automatic operation, daytime running lights, direction indicators and tail lights, plus a roof-mounted spot lamp and a halogen fog lamp in the bumper.
Electrical power comes from a 180 Ah battery and a 100 A alternator, with a battery monitor and a double-acting master switch operated from the cab. USB charging is fitted at both driver and passenger positions, alongside an extended 24 V socket configuration in the cab.
The chassis cab is supplied with 12 months R&M (Repair & Maintenance) cover. Extended Scania warranty and R&M packages are available at additional cost.
A Scania Communicator C400 (standard E modem region) provides remote over-the-air updates, with 7 years’ online navigation map updates included. Scania Connected Services is activated for support, maintenance and fleet-management data provision, and the Stoneridge Smart 2 digital tachograph supports remote reading and automatic recording at border crossings.
The GSR 2024 safety package includes driver attention support and emergency braking indication that activates the hazard lights under sudden braking by the driver or the automatic emergency braking system. Vulnerable road user collision warning covers the front and left-hand side, with sensors detecting pedestrians and cyclists and alerting the driver, and rear detection is provided by a camera with the view shown on the centre display. Blind spot warning and speed sign information, read from a forward camera and map data, add further driver support.
A reverse buzzer with a driver switch and a self-adjusting white-noise reverse alarm protect those around the vehicle when reversing. Security is covered by an immobiliser and a battery monitor, with wiring fitted for an alcolock ignition interlock, which can be added without further rewiring.
Bodywork
The chassis is fitted with a Hyva Titan 26-56 RORO hookloader, rated to lift 26 tonnes. It’s built from high-tensile steel, which keeps the loading height low while still giving the frame the strength it needs — a lower hook height makes containers easier to pick up and set down on uneven ground. The main lifting cylinders use heavy-duty 90 mm piston rods, mounted in a reinforced main frame and rear pivot assembly built for daily, high-cycle use.
Containers are held in place by CHEM-standard rear-facing locks, running on two rear rollers plus three additional reinforced rollers bolted on each side — the extra rollers spread the load and cut wear as the container slides on and off. Two rear stabiliser jacks drop down to steady the truck while loading. Anodised aluminium side guards, a rear under-run bar, and easily replaceable rear light boards and mud wings round out the build for site and road use.
The hook is worked from pneumatically operated, step-by-step in-cab controls, with warning lights for when the body is raised or the rear stabilisers are deployed, so the driver always knows when the vehicle isn’t ready to move. Hydraulic power comes from a Hyva PTO and bent-axis piston pump, driving the whole lifting and sheeting system from a single source.
Covering the load is handled by Hyva’s width-adjustable, double-arm sheeting system, which adjusts to fit a range of container sizes. The tarpaulin or net is stored on a roller and pulled across the container, secured with elastic cords and an adjustable boat hook pole. The whole system runs on the truck’s own hydraulics and is operated from an external control panel behind the cab, driver’s side — so the sheet goes on without anyone climbing up to the load.
