Technical Detail

Chassis

The DAF XB day cab, 2,130 mm wide, is trimmed in velour upholstery with vinyl seat backs. The driving position is left-hand drive, seating the operator on the kerb side for a direct view of the sweeping edge. The driver’s seat is air suspended with an integral head restraint, alongside a fixed co-driver seat, and the steering wheel is leather finished with rake adjustment.

The driving area centres on a 5-inch colour display in the instrument panel with Driver Performance Assistant fuel coaching, and the DAF Infotainment system provides FM/DAB radio with Bluetooth and USB streaming through a three-speaker system, controlled from the steering wheel. Manually controlled air conditioning with recirculation keeps the cab comfortable, with green-tinted glass and a translucent external sun visor cutting glare.

Externally, the XB carries a steel bumper with front underrun protection. Electrically heated and adjusted main and wide-angle mirrors, kerb-view and front-view mirrors and a rear-view camera on a dedicated display give all-round visibility, and central locking comes with two remote units.

The XB 230 carries DAF’s PX-7, a 6.7-litre, six-cylinder Euro 6 engine producing 227 hp at 1,900 rpm, and 890 Nm of torque from 1,000 to 1,700 rpm. The low-rev torque means power is effectively delivered when pulling away loaded, without revving the engine hard, then settling into efficient cruising on the road run.

Drive is delivered through the PowerLine 8AP1000 8-speed automatic gearbox, spanning ratios from 4.89 to 0.64: strong gearing for pull-away, with an overdrive top gear that lowers engine speed on the road. The SR10.15 single-reduction rear axle runs a 5.57 ratio with a mechanical differential lock for traction on poor ground.

The 4×2 layout runs a 6.0-tonne F60 front axle on parabolic leaf suspension with shock absorbers and a stabiliser, and a 10.5-tonne SR10.15 driven rear axle on asymmetric parabolic leaf, at 16,000 kg GVM.

The exhaust brake is integrated in the electronic braking system and operates on throttle release, saving the service brakes on descents, while anti-slip regulation stops the driven wheels spinning under acceleration.

Wheels are 19.5 × 7.50 steel rims fitted with Goodyear KMAX regional-pattern steer and traction tyres, 285/70R19.5, winter rated (3PMSF).

A 115-litre plastic fuel tank sits in the rear overhang with the 20-litre AdBlue tank on the left-hand side behind the cab.

Emission control is DAF’s Euro 6 system, with the exhaust after-treatment unit mounted behind the cab and discharging vertically, keeping exhaust clear of ground level where the sweeper works.

PTO operation is controlled from a dashboard switch, working through a control valve on the chassis, with hardwired engagement, status and warning signals shown to the driver in the cab: simple, direct control of the sweeper’s power take-off from the driving seat.

Lighting is bi-reflector halogen headlamps with impact-resistant Lexan lenses and a levelling device, daytime running lights and LED rear light units.

Electrical power comes from twin 125 Ah batteries and an 80 A alternator on a 24 V supply, with a 24 V to 12 V converter rated at 15 A supplying 12-volt auxiliary equipment.

Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a set following distance, with Forward Collision Warning and AEBS-3 emergency braking that alerts the driver and applies the brakes to avoid or mitigate a collision with traffic ahead. Lane Departure Warning guards against drifting out of lane, and Vehicle Stability Control improves directional stability and roll-over safety.

A broadband reverse warning with self-adjusting volume protects those around the vehicle when reversing. Security is covered by an engine immobiliser with fuel-injection inhibit and starter-circuit interruption.

The chassis cab is supplied with DAF’s Warranty Plus package: one year on the complete vehicle and three years on the driveline, with associated breakdown cover. Additional service packages are available at additional cost.

A smart digital tachograph (VDO DTCO with GNSS receiver and DSRC unit) is fitted, compliant with EU Mobility Package 1. PACCAR Connect online fleet management gives insight into truck, driver and location information, and a universal FMS connector with wiring lets third-party fleet management systems read vehicle information to the truck manufacturers’ FMS standard.

Bodywork

The hopper holds 6.5 m³ in 1.4003 grade stainless steel with a 1.4003 grade rear door, giving corrosion resistance in wet, abrasive sweeping conditions. The cowl is mild steel in a Smoothflow profile, keeping airflow and debris moving without build-up points.

Side access doors on both sides give servicing access, and the hopper discharges through the rear door, secured by a twin door clamping system that seals under load and releases cleanly at tip. Finish is a single colour to your BS or RAL specification.

Two amber LED rotating beacons sit on the body rear and one on the cab roof, with LED worklamps to the sweeping system, Chapter 8 chevrons on the rear door, and yellow ECE 104 conspicuity tape.

Sweeping power comes from a dedicated auxiliary engine, a JCB 55 kW Dieselmax meeting Stage 5 emissions standards, keeping the sweeping hydraulics independent of the chassis engine. It is a twin engine configuration with a single hydraulic pump and a 24V electrical requirement.

Fuel is drawn from a 190 litre tank with a locking cap, and the Powasave/Thrust economy feature manages auxiliary engine output to reduce fuel use.

The integrated water tank holds 1,545 litres, filled through a Type A 2½ inch BSP hydrant coupling fitted with a waterbreak to prevent backflow contamination. The Pressadrain system purges the tank and lines for lay-up or frost protection.

High-pressure washing is by a Supawash system rated at 32 l/min at 100 bar, with a handlance, a slim hose reel, a centre mounted spraybar and rear mounted nozzle spraybar(s) for dust suppression and washdown.

This is a Dual Sweep machine, running left and right channel brushes together through the Simultaneous Sweep system for full width coverage in one pass. Channel brushes are 500 mm diameter with steel tines on a long reach mounting for kerbline access, with quick release changeover and variable speed. The wide sweep brush uses poly segment stock on the same quick change system.

Debris is drawn through 250 mm diameter trunking with low noise nozzle rubbers, and a Maxigap nozzle with fixed aperture positioning. A 150 mm (6 in) wanderhose is top mounted and spring assisted, with two quick attach/release extensions for hand sweeping beyond the machine’s reach.

Control is from a wireless pendant covering back door release and body tip, usable from the cab or from beside the vehicle. In-cab instrumentation gives data capture, an audible and visual raised hopper warning, fuel and water gauges, an auxiliary engine hour counter and tachometer, and a maximum payload indicator.

Dual rear facing cameras, one on the brush side opposite the driving position, display in-cab; external electrical connections are IP67 rated.

Warranty cover is 1 year, or a maximum of 1,500 hours, whichever comes first. An English language Operators Guide is supplied in A5 hard copy, with Parts and Maintenance Manuals on CD (English only). Training is available on request; Bucher Municipal runs a nationwide UK regional service centre network.
