Choosing a Steel Tipper
Why HARDOX 450?
Muck-away, demolition rubble and hardcore wear a tipper body out from the inside. Our steel tippers are built from Hardox 450, an abrasion-resistant steel with a nominal hardness of 450 HBW. It resists dents and wear far better than mild steels, so the body lasts longer under constant loading and tipping.
The floor is 5 mm and the sides, headboard and tailgate are 4 mm, all pressed Hardox 450. The details matter too. The floor has angled edges where it meets the sides, so material doesn’t stick when you tip. The top rails are folded from a single piece with a chamfer, so spoil can’t rest on them when loading. The headboard is reinforced with two vertical C channels and two lateral tie bars.
Built by Kel-Berg
We build the body ourselves and fit the Edbro CX15 front-mounted tipping cylinder, rated to lift 29 to 32 tonnes. Tipping is controlled from the cab, through dashboard buttons on DAF and an Edbro lever on Scania and Volvo. An in-cab light and buzzer warn the driver whenever the body is raised.
The top-swung tailgate locks automatically with a heavy-duty 4-tab locking bar, and a steel cover plate stops stones getting trapped in it. The body is shot blasted and finished in two-pack paint in the RAL colour of your choice. The cab guard, wings, underrun, hinge brackets and other fittings are galvanised. The 500 mm cab guard already has space for a sheet roller and motor, so adding a sheeting system is straightforward.
The body carries a three-year warranty, as do the PTO and tipping gear, with two years on the paint. Because we build the body, we can also repair it if it is ever damaged.
Choosing the Chassis
The body is built on three 8×4 day cabs, all plated at 32,000 kg GVM with automated gearboxes. The DAF XDC 450 has the highest output, 449 bhp and 2,350 Nm, from the smallest engine, the 10.8-litre MX-11. The Scania P420 XT pairs a 13-litre DC13 at 420 hp with a 14-speed Opticruise gearbox and a crawler gear for site work. The Volvo FMX 420 runs a 12.8-litre D13K at 420 hp, with a heavy-duty bumper and sump guard for rough ground.
Each manufacturer also has its own style of cab. Many operators stay with the make their fleet already runs, so drivers keep familiar controls and the spares you stock still fit. Resale value matters too, because the make affects what the truck is worth when you replace it.
Steel vs. Aluminium?
Choose the body by what you haul, not by payload alone. A steel body is heavier than an aluminium one, so it gives up some payload. In return it stands up far better to rubble, rock and demolition waste that would dent and wear an alloy body. If you mostly carry clean aggregates, an aluminium tipper may suit you better.

Common Questions
We quote every steel tipper on its own specification, because the chassis make, paint colour and options you choose all affect the price. Tell us how you will use the truck and we will send a full quotation.
The time from order to delivery depends on chassis availability and our build schedule, because we build the body and fit the tipping gear ourselves. Our team will confirm a delivery date when we quote.
Choose steel if you haul muck-away, demolition rubble or rock, because HARDOX 450 resists dents and wear far better. An aluminium body is lighter and carries more payload, so it suits operators who mostly haul clean aggregates.
We build our HARDOX steel tipper on the DAF XDC 450, Scania P420 XT and Volvo FMX 420. All three are 8×4 day cabs with automated gearboxes, plated at 32,000 kg GVM.
Yes. We can arrange finance on a new steel tipper, with terms set around your business and budget. Ask our team about the options when you request a quote, and we will include them alongside the price.
The body is covered for three years, the PTO and tipping gear for three years, and the anti-corrosion paint for two years. Chassis cover depends on the make you choose, and we will confirm it when we quote.
